RECAP: And Then There Were Five on The X Factor

3:50PM December 2, 2011

The top seven became five on The X Factor results show after they took on Michael Jackson songs this week.  I predicted that Marcus Canty and Rachel Crow would be goners, but boy was I wrong.  The contestants collaborated on MJ’s “Man in the Mirror,” and rapper Tinie Tempah performed before two of them were sent packing.  Watch Tinie sing his hit "Pass Out" in the clip below:

Astro was the first to be eliminated after receiving the lowest number of votes.  For once, he didn’t have a bad attitude.  I hope that this competition has given him the opportunity to grow up a little bit.  He’s definitely a great rapper and young enough to still have a career.  Next….

Drew and Marcus were the two contestants forced to sing for their survival.  Drew sang “Listen to Your Heart” by Roxette and Marcus chose “Neither One of Us (Wants to be the First to Say Goodbye)” by Gladys Knight and the Pips.   According to host Steve Jones, Marcus’ performance was “snazzy,” even though I didn’t know people still used that word.  I thought Marcus sounded off-pitch, while Drew gave a better performance.

Paula Abdul, Drew and Simon Cowell

In a decision that shocked me, Drew was chosen to be eliminated. Saying Drew had a breakdown would be an understatement.  While it could be easy to chuckle at her emotional meltdown, she’s only 14.  I was probably doing the same thing when I was her age.  Don’t worry, Drew.  There’s always American Idol once you are 16.

Top 5

The five contestants remaining are Josh Krajcik, Chris Rene, Melanie Amaro, Rachel and Marcus.  Taking a look at the roster, I’m hoping that Chris will win since Drew is out.  Melanie is stepping up her game though, so she could take the whole thing.  Tune in next week to see who advances.
